What is a cam site?
A cam site is a platform where performers stream live from their webcam and viewers watch, chat and tip. Everything happens in real time: you can talk to the performer, make requests, and on most sites take her into a private show. That’s the big difference with porn videos: you’re part of the show.
Free, premium and pay-per-minute sites
Cam sites make money in three ways.
- Freemium (free to watch). Public shows are free; viewers who tip pay for the action, and everyone in the room enjoys it. Chaturbate, Stripchat, BongaCams, Cam4, CamSoda and MyFreeCams work this way. See the best free cam sites.
- Premium. A free chat to get acquainted, then paid private shows with mostly professional performers. LiveJasmin is the best-known example; on LiveJasmin, the special acts on a performer’s list only happen in private.
- Pay-per-minute. Almost everything costs per minute, with at most a short free preview. Visit-X gives you a free Live Preview of a few seconds; XCams has a free chat where explicit shows aren’t allowed.
Tokens, credits and Gold
Cam sites use their own currency, which you buy in packages. Bigger packages are usually cheaper per unit.

A cheaper token doesn’t automatically mean a cheaper show: performers set their prices in tokens, so compare what a minute costs. BongaCams’ default private (60 tokens a minute) comes to about $3.30 to $5.10 a minute; an XCams private at 5 credits a minute is about $1.
Show types
- Public or free chat: the free part. You watch, chat and tip for requests.
- Private show: one-on-one with the performer, paid per minute. On some sites others can still spy.
- Exclusive private: nobody can spy. Stripchat calls it Exclusive Private, BongaCams Full-private, MyFreeCams TruePrivate (80 tokens a minute instead of 60), XLoveCam 100% Xclusive.
- Spy or voyeur: watch someone else’s private show for less, without chatting. BongaCams charges 15 tokens a minute by default; MyFreeCams 20; XCams half the VIP rate; LiveJasmin sells 25-second peeks for 1.99 credits.
- Group, ticket and goal shows: several viewers share one show. MyFreeCams group shows cost 10 tokens a minute; on Jerkmate’s Gold Shows and LiveJasmin’s VIP Shows the room chips in toward a goal.
- Cam2cam: the performer sees you too. Free on MyFreeCams and Visit-X, at no extra charge on ImLive, sometimes extra on LiveJasmin. See the best cam2cam sites.
- Interactive toys: you make the performer’s toy react, usually with tips. Stripchat and CamSoda performers use them, and on XLoveCam you take control of the toy in a 100% Xclusive show.
What a private show really costs
Some real numbers: BongaCams’ default private rate is 60 tokens a minute (at 5 to 8 cents a token, roughly $3.30 to $5.10 a minute). MyFreeCams charges 60 tokens a minute too. XCams privates cost 5, 7 or 10 credits a minute, VIP 10, 15 or 20. ImLive hosts charge 0.98 to 5.80 ImLive Credits a minute, priced by member ratings. On LiveJasmin and BongaCams you’re billed per second, so you only pay for the time you spend.
Memberships
Most sites have an optional paid membership with extras like ad-free browsing or free messages: Chaturbate Supporter ($19.95 a month), Flirt4Free VIP ($39.95 per 30 days with 150 credits), Visit-X VIP Club (€9.95 a month), Cam4 Gold and Stripchat Ultimate. Others make you premium for free once you buy: MyFreeCams (for life after your first purchase) and LiveJasmin (from 27.99 credits).
Tips before you spend
- Set a budget, and watch the clock in private shows.
- Switch off automatic top-ups if you’d rather stay in control: BongaCams’ Auto Top-up, LiveJasmin’s SmartBuy and Visit-X’s automatic recharge all rebuy coins without asking.
- Leave a disappointing show quickly. Stripchat, for example, gives no full refund once a private has run past five minutes.
